HUM dispatched adelegation of 16 teachers to participate in the three-week training program entitled“Training in advanced multiple medical educational methodologies” at the TulaneUniversity from July 29th to August 17th, 2018. Thistraining program was run at Tulane University School of Medicine, by the Departmentof Structural and Cellular Biology, with the focus on enhancing the delegates’knowledge of medical education, including medical curriculum design, practicalEnglish communication skills, the application of SP in medical education, variousadvanced interactive instructional strategies, teaching demonstrations, medicaleducation research, and biomedical research etc.
During the 21 days’ stayat Tulane University, the delegation received a rich and comprehensivetraining. They were first introduced with medical education in the US, the coursesetting, and the leadership training in medical education, followed by the trainingon systemic and multidisciplinary knowledge integration, the organicintegration between the professional courses and the humanities, and theconstruction of the learning environment. During the following days theyparticipated in various lectures focusing on the new technologies applicationin medical education, medical education research methods and biomedicalscience research, such as “Introduction to curriculum design and redesign”,“Writing learning objective and effective multiple choice questions”, “Buildingactive learning into large classes”, “Demonstration of Anatomy course designand observation of the cadaver as your first patient”, “Demonstration ofanatomy labs”, “Team-based learning (TBL) and its application in differentcourse designs”, “Case-based learning (CBL) and its application in physiologyand course design”, “Self-directed learning (SDL) and its application inHistology course design”, “Foundations in medicine(FiM) design throughpre-clinical years”, “Concept mapping and its application in microbiologycourse design”, and “Flipped classroom and its application in Biochemistrycourse design”. All the members from the delegation showed stronginterests in the new strategies by warm discussions in comparing thedifferences of Sino-American medical education and by reflections on their ownteaching methods.
During the training, theparticipants visited the SP Centre and the TBL Teaching Centre, and observed agroup-based anatomy course. Besides, they also participated in the first classof the basic medical phase for medical students at the new term start-up.
Since 2014, HUMdispatched faculty delegation to famous universities in the UK and the USA to receivethematic training every year, and has formed a stable and systemic training pattern.These overseas training programs served to build an important platform forscientific research cooperation, to learn from advanced educational conceptsand teaching methods and to promote teachers’ individual development, thusgreatly improving university’s overall level and internationalization.
