Established in March 2011, The School of Biomedical Engineering consists of 3 basic disciplines; medical imaging, medical laboratory science, and bioscience. The School of Biomedical Engineering runs 5 departments; the Department of Medical Imaging No.1-3, the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, and the Department of Bioscience. The School of Biomedical Engineering can grant bachelor’s degrees in Medicine as well as Science. Biomedical Engineering offers both 5-year and 4-year programs, and consists of 23 teaching and research offices and laboratories.
The School of Biomedical Engineering is supported the affiliated hospitals; Taihe hospital, Dongfeng Hospital, People’s Hospital, the Reproductive Medicine Center, the Life Science Institute, the Clinical Medicine Institute and the Organ Transplant Institute, and is supported by its excellent teaching team. The School has 1 Outstanding Teacher and 3 with State Council Special Allowance. The Department of Biomedical Engineering employs 117 teachers who hold doctorate or master’s degree, and 10 experts who have been appointed as master supervisors. As the second largest school at Hubei University of Medicine, the total number of students in the programs is over 1600. HUM works with 20 3-A level hospitals located in Hubei, Shanxi, Henan, Guangdong and Shanghai as teaching and practice hospitals.
The Medical Imaging specialty was authorized by the State Ministry of Education in April 2002, began to enroll students independently in 2003, and saw the first students of medical imaging graduate in July 2005. Medical Imaging is a 5-year program, students with a major in Medical Imaging will receive a bachelor’s degree in Medical Science upon course completion. Based on the traditional medical imaging science and combined the advanced medical imaging technology at home and abroad, Medical Imaging aims to give students a comprehensive theoretical knowledge and professional diagnosis skills. With a clinical medical knowledge, knowledge of the social sciences and, by mastering some medical law, students are not only able to diagnose common and frequently-occurring diseases with medical imaging; but also able to engage in medical education, research, health laws and health management. After graduation most students are mainly occupied in medical imaging and interventional diagnosis and treatment, graduates find jobs in hospitals and medical institutions in many different provinces, cities and counties. The employment rate among graduates is nearly 100%.
Founded in 2004, the Medical Laboratory Science specialty offers a 4-year program. Students will be granted a bachelor’s degree in Science when the required courses are completed. The Medical Laboratory Science specialty aims to give students theoretical knowledge and fundamental skills in basic medicine, clinical medicine and medical laboratory science. After graduation, graduates are qualified to work in hospitals, blood banks, epidemic prevention organizations and medical laboratories of many levels. Some graduates go on to conduct scientific research work in medical schools and work in fields that include environmental protection, maritime quarantine, drugs development and even marketing.
Founded in 2011, the specialty of Bioscience is a 4-year program. Students will be granted a Bachelor of Science degree when all required courses are completed. Equipped with the basic theoretical knowledge in bioscience and technology, and mastering fundamental professional knowledge in bioscience and skills, the graduates are qualified in the enterprises of biological products, human reproductive centers, medical laboratory centers, diseases control, medical colleges and scientific research institutes in hospitals of many levels. The Reproductive Medical Center of People’s Hospital, one of the main hospitals affiliated with Hubei University of Medicine, is the birthplace of the first IVF in Hubei Province. Zhang Changjun, the head of the Center is honored as the Father of IVF in Hubei Province.
