Founded in January 2004, the First Clinical School consists of departments in Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Rehabilitation Medicine.
The Clinical Medicine discipline was founded in 1965, and is a distinction specialty in Hubei. The discipline of Anesthesiology, established in 1989, is first anesthesiology specialty in Hubei Province and the second in China, anesthesiology was listed as the National Distinguished Major Development Program in 2007. The teaching team for anesthesiology was given the Provincial Excellent Teaching Team award. Beginning in 2005, the Rehabilitation and Aesthetic Surgery program was upgraded into four-year program in 2010, which gave it the ability grant the bachelor degree.
The First Clinical School consists of 28 teaching and research offices. Teaching activities are conducted based on Taihe Hospital affiliated with HUM. Taihe Hospital is national comprehensive Grade A tertiary hospital, and has won the honors of National Civilized Unit, National Advanced Collectives of May 1st Labor Prize, National Top One Hundred Model Hospital with People’s Trust and the name card of Shiyan. Taihe Hospital has 2,900 beds, 1.5 million outpatients, 70,000 in-patients and performs 30,000 surgeries annually. The Clinical Center is equipped with multifunctional SIM, simulated infants and MicroSim Learning software.
The faculty at the School is 263 including the external teachers; 185 of the staff (70.34%) hold the vice-senior title, 165 teacher have master's degrees and 50 have doctorate degrees. There remainder of the First Clinical School staff (52) are master tutors.
The School has 3 key disciplines, namely Internal Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesiology, all authorized by the Department of Education of Hubei Province. 13 master joint cultivation agencies, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, neurology and Anesthesiology, 2 Provincial Excellent Courses, like Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology, and 9 HUM Excellent Courses, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, diagnostics, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, Neurology &Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Medicine of Critical Disease and Clinical Anesthesiology.
There are 2161 student enrolled in the First Clinical School on campus and more than 26 teaching and training hospitals that are ranked as 3-A level hospitals. A variety of extracurricular activities are available for students, including a clinical skills contest, Career Path Plan, Design Competition and an English Talent Competition, these extra curricular activities aim to improve students’ comprehensive abilities. Much attention has also been paid to students’ social practice. Team of volunteers have been organized, the Rainbow Disaster Rescue Team, Volunteers for the Liujiawan Primary School and Volunteers for Shiyan Special School, which have won good reputations.
Students from the First Clinical School past the postgraduate entrance exam at the highest rate at HUM, and the employment rate for graduates remains above 97%.
