The School of Pharmacy was founded in March 2011, its predecessor was the Department of Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Science. The School has two specialties: pharmaceutical engineering, and Pharmacy. The pharmaceutical engineering specialty was introduced in 2002, which is the Hubei Provincial Brand Undergraduate Discipline. Pharmaceutical engineering offers 4 majors: pharmaceutical preparation, clinical pharmacy, Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing and pharmaceutical marketing. Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing is the Talent Training Plan for Emerging Industries in the Universities of Hubei Province. Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing is also the leading specialty of the Comprehensive Reform of Specialty at Hubei University. Pharmaceutics is the provincial key discipline and pharmacognosy is the key discipline of HUM. The Chinese Medicinal Herb Pharmacology Lab is a level 3 laboratory for Traditional Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After years of effort, pharmacy is becoming a well-structured, large scale discipline. The graduates of the Pharmacy school will have a bright future in the medical field.

The School has 60 faculty, 29 of whom are members of the senior staff, and 29 who currently hold doctorate or masters' degrees. The School carries out the United Training Postgraduate Program with Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Hubei University of Chinese Medicine. Currently 3 experts are appointed to be the master supervisors. Wu Hongling, a teacher of the school, is Hubei Provincial Model Moral Educator and Chen Jiyan enjoys the State Council Special Allowance.

Teaching quality is heavily emphasized in the Pharmacy School, teachers are encouraged to strictly grade their teaching activities, this helps teachers to continuously improve their teaching quality and ability. Teaching assessments are carried out regularly, and teachers are always collecting suggestions from their students. Students’ evaluation and feedback is taken seriously. To ensure the quality of teaching we use a thorough teaching structure that guides teachers to continue to improve throughout their tenure.

During the practical teaching- the classroom experiment, outdoor practice, clinical practice and internship have been united to cultivate and improve the students’ practical abilities as well as their comprehension. The School has 5 standard laboratories and 1 precision instrument laboratory, with total area of 436m². 29 practice and internship bases are available, 22 at 3-A Level hospitals, 2 at institutes and 5 with large scale pharmaceutical enterprises or pharmaceutical sales companies. In 2009, HUM invested large amount of money to construct the “Herbal Garden”, where students can now practice.

Sticking to our student-centered principle, the School is guiding students to be willing, ready and able to study arduously. The students are required to self-manage, self-cultivate and to be self-sufficient. Large numbers of our students have won honors. The employment rates among our graduates continues to be 95% or higher. Many of our graduates are becoming the backbone of medical institutes, enterprises and scientific research facilities.
