The Heart Disease Research Center was built on the basis of the “Cardiovascular Collaborative Team” at Dongfeng Hospital in 1990, which cooperated with the Cardiovascular Institute of the Tongji Medical University (today operating as Tongji Medical College and Huazhong University of Science and Technology) in October 1994 and established the Cardiovascular Institute at Tongji Medical. In 2009 the Cardiology Research Center of Yunyang Medical College was formally established, later it was renamed the “Medical Cardiology Research Center of Hubei University of Medicine” upon the school’s name change.  The Heart Disease Research Center now has 5 professors, 5 associate professors and, 10 staff who hold doctorate degrees. The center director and academic leader, Professor Yang Handong is Master Instructor at the Department of Cardiology in the People’s Hospital of Wuhan University. The Heart Disease Research Center has also hired “Chutian Scholar” Professor Wang Yanggan as honorary director of the center, “Changjiang Scholar” and professor at the School of Medicine of Harvard University, Professor Hu Bingchang “Changjiang Scholar” and, Professor Wu Tang Chun; Dean of School of Public Health at Tongji Medical College and Huazhong University of Science and Technology as visiting Professors of the center.

The Heart Disease Research Center has departments in cardiology,  cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac ICU, cardiovascular intervention, cardiovascular research, cardiac structure and cardiac function. Among the departments cardiology and cardiothorasic surgery are a Hubei Provincial major clinical specialty. The team for basic research on prevention of atherosclerosis is an outstanding scientific and technologically innovating team awarded by Hubei Provincial Ministry of Education; the team conducting research on “Mechanisms of ventricular remodeling and targeted therapy” have been awarded by HUM for research project innovation.

The Heart Disease Research Center focuses on clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases by closely combining the their research with basic scientific research so as to improve their diagnostic abilities. The Heart Disease Research Center has spent tens of millions in funds to purchase IVUS, CARTO three-dimensional electrical mapping system, treadmill exercise stress test machine and large ultrasound equipment to improve medical conditions and strengthening the infrastructure of the center.  Heart Disease Research Center makes great efforts to establish itself as one of Hubei Provincial’s foremost Heart Failure Institutes. The center conducts cardiovascular remodeling and targeted therapy, strategy study of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients for revascularization, basic and clinical research of coronary heart diseases, studies the application of imaging technology in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The Heart Disease Research Center targets basic research and treatment center for cardiac diseases in the regions around Hubei, Chongqing, Sichuan, Shanxi and Henan.
